There is nothing wrong in scanning pictures into your computer as long as the pictures themselves are not indecent and are used for acceptable and legal purposes.
Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states: “According to the well-known principles of the Shari`ah, everything is to be deemed as permissible unless proven otherwise. Since there is no proof to show that this is haram, it is deemed as permissible.
We cannot consider all pictures as haram, for unlike the function of image making in the pagan societies of the past, pictures serve as powerful mediums of communication. Should we refuse to use them to serve the cause of truth and justice, the devils will definitely use them for bad purposes. So, as is the case with all such means and devices, the good of it is halal (lawful) and the bad of it is haram .
So consider what you are doing carefully. Ask yourself whether the work you are doing falls into the category of halal or haram by considering the purpose and function as well as the message you are conveying through it. Remember our choice in life is limited to acting as instruments of good or as instruments of evil; let us, therefore, choose to be instruments of good.”
