The description of Paradise (Jannah) in Islamic texts is one of unimaginable beauty and delight. A frequently asked question concerns the specific rewards mentioned in the Qur’an. While the texts explicitly mention Hoor Al-‘Ayn (pure, fair companions) for men, believing women often wonder about their specific share of such companionship.
This article explores the nature of rewards in Paradise and addresses the status of women in the abode of eternal bliss.
The General Rule: Absolute Satisfaction
The fundamental principle of Paradise is that it is a place of complete satisfaction, free from want or deprivation. Allah has prepared for His righteous servants—both male and female—rewards that transcend human imagination.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) related that Allah said:
I have prepared for My righteous slaves that which no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and has never crossed the mind of any human being.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)
Therefore, the believer should rest assured that there is no room for discrimination or dissatisfaction in the Hereafter. Allah calls upon all His servants to strive for this reward:
“And vie one with another for forgiveness from your Lord, and for a Paradise as wide as are the heavens and the earth, prepared for those who ward off (evil).” (Surah Al ‘Imran, 3:133)
Why are Hoor Al-‘Ayn Mentioned for Men?
Scholars explain that the Qur’anic focus on Hoor Al-‘Ayn for men addresses the psychological nature of human beings. In the context of earthly life, men are typically the pursuers of women, and their desire is often more visually driven. Thus, the promise of Hoor Al-‘Ayn serves as a specific motivation for men to restrain their lower desires in this world.
For women, whose desires are often described as being more centred on emotional connection, security, and adornment, Allah promises rewards that align with their nature, including jewellery, silk, and eternal youth.
The Status of the Believing Woman
Regarding companionship for women, scholars clarify several key points:
- Marriage in Paradise: A believing woman will not remain single in Paradise. If she was married in this world to a righteous husband, she will be with him in the Hereafter. If she was unmarried or her husband did not enter Paradise, Allah will marry her to a righteous believer who will be the delight of her eyes.
- Superiority over Hoor Al-‘Ayn: It is a common misconception that the Hoor Al-‘Ayn are superior to human women. On the contrary, scholars state that the believing woman of this world is far superior. Because of her worship, patience, and righteous deeds in this life, she will be the “queen” or “mistress” of her domain in Paradise. She will be granted a beauty that far outshines the Hoor Al-‘Ayn, just as the sun outshines the stars.
- Contentment: A woman in Paradise will be entirely content with her husband. Allah will remove all negative emotions, such as jealousy (Ghil) or envy, from the hearts of believers. She will not feel jealous of the Hoor Al-‘Ayn, nor will she desire anyone other than her husband.
Conclusion
Allah is the Most Just (Al-‘Adl). He does not short-change any servant, male or female. While the specific descriptions of rewards may differ to appeal to the distinct natures of men and women, the ultimate result is the same: a state of eternal happiness where every desire is fulfilled and every heart is at peace.
