It should be noted that husband and a wife is advisable to occupy the same bed. Sheikh Muhammad Salih Al-Munajjid, a renowned Muslims scholar, states,

It is part of the Sunnah for the husband and wife to share the same bed, as indicated by many hadiths, including what was narrated by Al-Bukhari and Muslim from ‘Ali, who said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him and Fatimah, may Allah be pleased with them both: “When you go to your bed, or when you lie down, say Allahu akbar (Allah is the greatest) thirty-three times, Subhan-Allah (glorified be Allah) thirty-three times and Alhamdulillah (praise be upon to Allah) thirty-three times.

According to another report narrated by Al-Bukhari, [‘Ali said:] “The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to us whilst we were lying down, and I went to stand up, but he said, ‘Stay where you are,’ and sat down between us, and I could feel the coolness of his feet on my chest.’”

This hadeeth with its clear wording indicates that it is sunnah for a man to sleep with his wife in one bed. “

This is the original ruling. Yet, this does not mean that sleeping separately is not permissible for a husband and a wife. The ruling on such case is dependent on the valid causes of doing so.

However, if any of the married couple wants to do that as a kind of unfairness against the other, such act becomes impermissible because the shari`ah enjoins that both the husband and his wife should live in concord and harmony with each other.

If a husband and a wife agree to do so agreeingly consensually, it is permissible, though the best in the case is to share the same bed as long as there does not exist a palatable cause of that such as infectious disease of one of them or the
