Dr. Jamal Badawi, Professor of Religious Studies and Management at St. Mary’s University & the Vice-Chairman of the Islamic American University, states:
“I have no evidence that playing with a dog is in itself haram; however, a dog should not be allowed to lick dishes and utensils, which may be harmful health-wise. Also most scholars are of the opinion that the dog’s saliva should be washed if it touches one’s hands or clothes. Some Maliki scholars are of the opinion that even the dog’s saliva is pure, and washing it is not required.”
