Regarding the Sunnah of the Jumu`ah Prayer, scholars agree that is recommended to pray Sunnah after Jumu`ah prayer but they differ on how many rak`ahs to be performed and where to perform them. Some scholars say that minimum number is two rak`ahs. In regards to praying Sunnah after Jumu`ah Prayer, the four schools of thought agree that it is recommended to pray Sunnah after it, although they differ on the number of rak`ahs to be performed and where to perform them.

The Hanafi school of thought say that it is recommended to pray four rak`ahs before Jumu`ah prayer. They base their opinion on the Hadith in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “If you pray after Jumu`ah, let it be four rak`ahs; but if you in a hurry, pray two rak`ahs in the mosque and two at home.” (Muslim)

The Maliki school of thought say that it is not recommended to pray any recommended prayers after Jumu`ah in the mosque, and it is rather recommended to pray any nafl prayers after Jumu`ah at home. They base their opinion on the narration of Ibn `Umar that he used to pray two rak`ahs at home after Jumu`ah, and he used to say: “the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do this.” (Muslim)

The Shafi`i school of thought say that the persistent Sunnah (confirmed recommendation) is to pray four rak`ahs after the Jumu`ah prayer. They base their opinion on the narration narrated by Abu Huraira that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “For he who wants to pray after Jumu`ah, let it be four rak`ahs.” (Muslim)

The Hanbali school of thought say that the minimum Sunnah after Jumu`ah Prayer is two rak`ahs and the maximum is six rak`ahs, and it is recommended that he prays them in the mosque.

Imam Ibn Taymiyah and his student imam Ibn al-Qayyim say the Sunnah prayer after Jumu`ah prayer is four rak`ahs if the person chooses to pray it in the mosque, or two rak`ahs if he chooses to pray it at home.
