Dr. Marawan Shahin, Professor of Hadith and its Sciences, Faculty of Usul Ad-Din (Theology), Al-Azhar Univ. states: “The Arabic terminology for sodomy in Islam is Luat which refers to the act of people of Prophet Lut (peace and blessings be upon him) as they used to practice the perverted sexual relationship between man and man. They were the first nation who practice this same sex relationship in public.
Almighty Allah says in the Qur’an: “And Lot who said to his people: ‘Do you do what is indecent though you see its iniquity? Would you really approach men in your lusts rather than women? You are a people grossly ignorant.’ His people gave no answer but this: ‘Drive out the followers of Lot from our city. They are indeed men who want to be clean and pure.’ But we saved him and his family except his wife: We destined her to be of those who lagged behind. And We raked down on them a shower: and evil was the shower on those who were admonished.” (An-Naml: 54-58). This heinous sin was not known before the people of Lut. Almighty Allah says, “And Lot! (Remember) when he said unto his folk: Will ye commit abomination such as no creature ever did before you? Lo! ye come with lust unto men instead of women. Nay, but ye, are wanton folk.” (Al-A`raf: 80-81)
Having said the above, it becomes clear that sodomy in Islam refers the practice of Lot’s people who used to practice perverted sexual relationship between man and man, the thing which is not known before them.
Furthermore, we’d like to point out that some Muslim scholars are of the opinion that luwat also involves intercourse in the anus either between man and man or man and woman.”
