Sheikh `Abdul-MajeedSubh, a prominent Azharite scholar, states: “Dhikru Allah (remembrance of Allah) in the hadiths is reported only in the form of complete sentences and not in names such as As-Saboor or Al-Baqi. There is not a single hadith that encourages reciting a single Name as done by non-scholar Sufis who gather on reciting Allah’s Names.

However, it is reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to make dhikr in complete sentences such as “SubhanaAllahiwabihamdihi, subhanaAllahi Al-`Azhim” and he recommended saying this for a hundred times on daily basis and he said that no one precedes the one who recites this except one who recites more than him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) also used to repent to Allah for a hundred times daily saying “Allahumaighfirlidhanbiinnaka anta At-Tawwabu Al-Ghafur.”
