First of all, it should be clear that a Muslim should seek a righteous spouse for marriage. Religion and good character should be the top concern of every Muslim when looking for a spouse. This is compatible with the Prophet’s guidance: “A woman is married for four things, i.e., her wealth, her family status, her beauty, and her religion. So you should marry the religious woman; (otherwise) you will be a loser.” (Reported by Al-Bukhari)

Therefore, we advise to concern ourselves first of all with the morals and characters of the would-be wife, in shaa’ Allah.

Moreover, we are highly encouraged to offer Istikharah Prayer to seek Allah’s guidance before taking any decisions. Also, we should consult parents and good friends who wish us what is best in this world and the world to come.

After doing the above, if we became sure that she enjoys good morals and character and is ready to wear hijab in the near future inahaa’ Allah then one can ask for her hand in marriage. During the period of engagement, one should set a good example for her in all aspects of life and to try your best to enhance her knowledge about Islam and the obligation of wearing hijab by providing her with some Islamic books, CDs or tapes about the ethics and morals of Islam. In this regard, we can seek the help of a Muslim sister to accompany her and to visit a nearby Islamic Center and to try her best to convince her of wearing hijab. If she became ready to change for better as said and to wear hijab, then go ahead with the marriage. However, if she failed to abide by the Islamic dress code for women and chose not to change, then do not go ahead with this marriage.
