Security in its comprehensive sense, which encompasses both the individual and the community, is not only a human value but a basic Islamic value as well. Islam is a universal message of peace and security for all people. It is a message of justice that transcends all geographical boundaries to establish tranquility, social solidarity, and social peace.
In Islam, security is an indispensable value for the human being. Without an atmosphere of stability and security, no development, civilization, or scientific advancement can be attained. Thus, it is no wonder that Islam considers security to be one of the greatest blessings endowed by Allah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is reported to have said, “Whoever wakes up in the morning secured in his home, healthy in his body, and (who) possesses his daily bread is like the one who is given the whole of this world as his possession” (At-Tirmidhi).
Moreover, Islam takes the necessary legal and executive measures to cement security and stability in the society. In approaching the issue of security, Islam takes into account both ethical and spiritual values as well as legal and practical measures. Islam establishes the sanctity of human life and totally prohibits taking the lives of innocent people. In addition, it prohibits corruption and mischief, and condemns in clear-cut terms those who seek to destabilize the society, declaring that they will be severely punished for their destructive acts.
Dr. Muzammil H. Siddiqi, president of the Fiqh Council of North America, states the following: Islam came to bring safety and security in the world. The word Islam means peace and the word iman means safety and security. The Qur’an mentions that freedom from hunger and freedom from fear are two great blessings of Allah. Muslims must work for both. We should try to see that the world has economic justice and also safety and security for all people.
Terrorism by definition means “targeting the innocent or attacking people indiscriminately.” This is not allowed in Islam. Terrorism brings insecurity for all people and this is the negation of civilization and culture. It is for this reason the fiqhi bodies in England, Europe and North America as well as in many other Muslim countries issued their fatwas condemning all acts of terrorism.
