Zeinab Al-`Alawani, Instructor of Fiqh and Islamic Studies, Graduate School of Islamic and Social Sciences, states the following: “If the majority of the people in a non-muslim country are People of the Book, i.e. Jews and Christians, then we can safely eat from their meat unless it is confirmed that they don’t slaughter their meat. However, if the majority of people are not People of the Book, then we should look for other alternatives such as fish. In either case, it is always safer to search for Muslim halal meat outlets so they can buy safely.”
