During his lifetime, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave glad tidings to many of his Companions promising them to enter the Paradise. In one hadith he named ten of his Companions and they became known as al-`ashrah al-mubashsharun bi al-Jannah (the ten promised with the Paradise). This does not mean that none else was given the same promise. Those ten are:
- Abu Bakr al-Siddiq
- Umar Ibn al-Khattab
- `Uthman Ibn `Affan
- `Ali Ibn Abi Talib
- Sa`d Ibn Abi Waqqas
- Al-Zubayr Ibn al-`Awwam
- Sa`id Ibn Zayd
- Talhah Ibn `Ubaydillah
- `Abd al-Rahman Ibn `Aawf
- Abu `Ubaydah Ibn al-Jarrah
