Death is the inevitable end of every living creature. All of us will die one day, and hence our reaction to the death of a relative or a dear person should be governed by the rules of the Shari`ah.

The Islamic Religious Council of Singapore states the following: It is not often that we hear of one afflicted with supernatural influence from the dead. It is because one’s exaggerated emotional responses when losing dear ones. This overreaction is usually marked by a shock over the loss of someone dear. We would like to advise those who lose someone dear to recite the following:

(Truly! To Allah we belong and truly, to Him we shall return.) (Al-Baqarah 2:157)

This is based on the hadith in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is reported to have said, “All Muslims who face a tragedy and say, ‘Truly! To Allah we belong and truly, to Him we shall return. O Allah! Reward me for my (patience) to this tragedy, and replace for me a better one’ will be given by Allah a better replacement” (Muslim).

Besides, we should also remember two important facts:

First, everything belongs to Allah.

Second, everyone will return to Allah alone and will be standing in front of Him to be judged accordingly.
