Long intervals between marriage and its consummation is not a detested act because the prophet (Peace be upon Him) tied the nuptial knot with our mother Aisha when she was six, and he did not consummate the marriage until she reached nine.

The suitor sometimes, out of affection may want to hasten to tie the knot (even if consummation will not take place) because he fears that the woman or her family would change their minds. This is legally acceptable. However, it is advised to make the consummation take place immediately or as soon as possible after the knot has been tied. This is in a bid to avoid problems that may occur from issues which may lead to divorce or even death – May Allah forbid – or other issues.
