Keeping Pictures of Prophet `Isa (PBUH) and His Mother

Dr. Marawan Shahin, Professor of Hadith and its Sciences, Faculty of Usul Ad-Din (Theology),Al-Azhar Univ. states: “First of all, we’d like to clarify that the existing photos you refer to are not the real pictures of Prophet `Isa (peace and blessings be upon him) or his mother, Lady Mariyam (may Allah be pleased with her). The existing photos are no more than imaginations.

As a Muslim, it is not permissible to keep such pictures because keeping them is an evidence that you believe that these pictures are the real pictures of Prophet Jesus and his mother (peace and blessings be upon them) while this is not true.

Furthermore, keeping these pictures may give rise to a feeling of reverence which was precisely the main thrust of the prohibition of Tasweer.

Having said this, you have to steer clear of keeping such pictures in order not to fall into the area of haram (the prohibition).”
