Hijab is a duty Allah Almighty prescribed for the Muslim woman, and she has to carry out that duty in compliance with the order of Allah, showing her sincere faith in Him, for He says: (And it becometh not a believing man or a believing woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decided an affair (for them), that they should (after that) claim any say in their affair) (Al-Ahzab 33: 36). Allah Almighty has obliged Muslim women to wear hijab in order to protect their honour and dignity.
Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states: This is another of those grandmother’s tales invented by unscrupulous people and passed on as religion; it may have been invented with the pious motive of scaring women so that they are coerced into wearing hijab. It is, however, important to state emphatically that we are not allowed to fabricate things in Islam, even for pious motives. Ironically, those who invent such tales fail to recognize that the sin of falsely ascribing things unto Allah and His Messenger is a far worse a offense in Islam than the sin they are supposed to be countering, namely, women going out without hijab. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Whoever attributes something falsely unto me, let him find his abode in Hellfire.” Allah Almighty says, (Say: “Those who invent lies about Allah never succeed) (Yunus 10: 69).
