Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states: “Talaq, we must know, is the most abominable of all permissible actions in Islam. So, we must guard against it as much as possible and we must never embark on it except in dire circumstances.
having said this, however, I must state that Islam gives either of the couple the right of divorce if there is a genuine harm that is unbearable; if therefore one has valid, and not mere speculation, reasons to fear that one may be contracting sexually transmitted diseases, then one has a right to seek divorce. But I must state emphatically, one cannot do so based on pure speculation. I advise couples to seek professional opinion on this issue before embarking on this decision.”
