Understanding the reality of Gog and Magog (Ya’juj and Ma’juj) requires a strict reliance on authentic scriptural texts, as their nature and current state belong to the realm of the unseen (Al-Ghaib). Speculative identification of these populations with specific modern nations or races lacks any foundational basis in Islamic texts. Instead, sound methodology demands analyzing their history, their containment, and their eventual emergence through the framework of the Quran and the authentic Sunnah.

The Historical Containment by Dhul-Qarnayn

Historically, Gog and Magog are two large, unruly, and disbelieving tribes descended from Adam. They were known for spreading severe corruption, violence, and mischief on earth. Their containment was achieved through the righteous ruler Dhul-Qarnayn, whom Allah endowed with great political power and engineering capability.

Upon traveling between two mountains, Dhul-Qarnayn encountered a population severely isolated by geography. This population requested assistance to protect them from the violent incursions of Gog and Magog, offering a tribute in return. Dhul-Qarnayn declined the financial tribute, relying instead on their physical labour to construct an impenetrable barrier. The construction process is explicitly detailed in the Quran:

“Bring me blocks of iron.” At length, when he had filled up the space between the two steep mountain-sides, he said, “Blow [with your bellows]”; then, when he had made it [red] as fire, he said: “Bring me molten copper to pour over it.” Thus were they made powerless to scale it or to dig through it. [Dhul-Qarnayn] said, “This is a mercy from my Lord; but when the promise of my Lord comes to pass, He will make it into dust; and the promise of my Lord is true.” (Surah Al-Kahf, 18:96-97)

The Daily Digging and Divine Decree

Prophetic traditions clarify that these tribes are alive and bound behind the barrier, attempting to dig through it every day. According to a Sahih Hadith narrated by At-Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah, and Ahmad, the tribes dig daily until they can see the glint of sunlight through the structure. At that point, their overseer instructs them to return the next day to complete the task.

In their absence, Allah restores the barrier to a state stronger than it was before. This cycle will repeat continuously until the end of time approaches. When Allah decrees their release, the overseer will naturally add the phrase “Insha’Allah” (if Allah wills), linking their success to the divine will. On the following day, they will find the hole exactly as they left it, allowing them to breach the structure and pour forth.

The End-Times Emergence and Destruction

The ultimate release of Gog and Magog is a major sign of the Day of Judgment. Their emergence will occur in the latter days, succeeding the second coming of Jesus, the son of Mary, and the subsequent destruction of the Dajjal (the Anti-Christ). The Quran describes the suddenness of their release:

“Until, when [the dam of] Gog and Magog has been opened and they, from every elevation, descend.” (Surah Al-Anbiya’, 21:96)

They will emerge in such overwhelming numbers that their vanguard will drink the entire volume of water in the Lake of Tiberias. No human force will possess the capacity to resist or fight them. Under divine instruction, Jesus and the community of believers will seek refuge atop Mount Tur.

The crisis will be resolved entirely through divine intervention rather than physical warfare. In response to the earnest supplications of Jesus, Allah will infect the necks of Gog and Magog with a specific type of worm (al-naghaf). This biological affliction will cause the entire population to perish simultaneously in a single night. Subsequently, Allah will send a sweeping rain to cleanse the earth, washing their remains into the sea and restoring peace and safety to the world.
