Dr. Jamal Badawi, Professor of Religious Studies and Management atSt. Mary’s University & the Vice-Chairman of the Islamic American University, states: There is no basis to say that the voice of women in itself `awrah. There has been many women spoke to the Prophet, peace be upon him, and his male Sahabah. What is forbidden in the Qur’an is to deliberately speak in a seductive manner to non-mahrems.
The desirability of reciting the Qur’an in a melodious manner includes both men and women. However, if there is fear of fitna if a woman recites the Qur’an melodiously in the presence of non-mahrem, it should be avoided.”
