Allah wants us to look neat and tidy, and by trying to do so we are not distorting Allah’s creation, rather we are only enhancing it. Therefore, if your hair is curly, then you can straighten it out by hair-relaxers as long as these creams are pure and harmless. This is not regarded as a form of distorting Allah’s creation that is mentioned in the Hadith of the Prophet condemning adding artificial or fake hair or wearing wigs.

The eminent Muslim scholar and renowned da`iSheikh `Abdel Khaliq Hasan Ash-Shareef states: “There is nothing wrong in relaxing curly hair as long as the chemical substances you use only relaxes the hair. This is permissible and not a form of distorting Allah’s creation. However, you should be careful if this cream constitutes an insulating layer on your hair that prevents water from being in direct contact with your hair. If it is so, then this will render your wudu’ (ablution) invalid if you make wudu’ while applying such cream relaxer until it is removed.”

Sheikh M. S. Al-Munajjid, a prominent Saudi Muslim lecturer and author, states: “There is nothing wrong with using something to make curly hair straight. This ruling applies to young and old alike, so long as no damage results from doing this and the material used is pure (tahir) and is something that is allowed in Islam.”
