Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states: “There is absolutely nothing wrong with following the reading of the Qur’an in the Mushaf (copy of the Qur’an) closely in order to improve recitation—provided, of course, it is being done outside of Prayer. In other words, if they’re simply sitting down and reading the Qur’an along with the imam who is reciting on TV, it is fine to do so.
However, no one is not permitted to do so in thier own Salah (prayer). In our Salah, while praying behind the imam, we are required to listen to the imam’s recitation attentively and therefore we must not read with him.”
