Believers sometimes encounter claims from individuals stating that a Muslim Jinn in Islam is present in their surroundings, allegedly causing disruptions in daily routines and prayers (salat). To properly contextualise such claims, it is essential to examine the true nature and purpose of the Jinn as outlined in the Quran, focusing on their religious responsibilities and existence.

The Purpose of Creation

Prominent scholars clarify that the Jinn, much like human beings, were created with a specific divine purpose. Almighty Allah explicitly states:

And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me” (Surah Adh-Dhariyat, 51:56).

This verse serves as definitive evidence that the Jinn exist and are religiously accountable entities who are commanded to worship the Creator.

Quranic Evidence and Interactions

The existence of these unseen beings is a fundamental reality in the religion, further solidified by the fact that an entire chapter of the Quran is named after them (Surah Al-Jinn). The scriptures recount a specific incident during the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) involving these entities. Allah directed a group of the Jinn to listen to the recitation of the Quran. Upon hearing the divine words, they recognised the truth and subsequently went back to their own kind to call them towards the message of Allah.

This monumental event is highlighted in the Quran:

“Say, [O Muhammad], ‘It has been revealed to me that a group of the jinn listened and said, “Indeed, we have heard an amazing Qur’an. It guides to the right course, and we have believed in it…”” (Surah Al-Jinn, 72:1-2).

Religious Obligations and Dawah

Consequently, it is an established fact that believing Jinn actively perform religious duties and obligations. Just as devout human beings do, these believing entities call others to the religion (deen) of Allah. Their existence and capabilities are inherently tied to fulfilling these spiritual responsibilities and acting as accountable worshippers of the Almighty.
