Dr. Muzammil H. Siddiqi, President of the Fiqh Council of North America, states the following: “Marrying a woman from the People of the Book is permissible according to Islam, but it is not something we recommend; not every halal thing is recommended to do. There is nothing wrong with someone marrying a Mennonite Christian but it is not recommended. We read in the history that Caliph `Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, did not allow his governors to marry from the People of the Book, and when asked whether he would consider is haram, he said, “no, but it is not something that I would recommend you to do.”
