Dr. Rif`at Fawzi, former professor of Shari`ah at Cairo Univ., states: It is sunnah to recite some verses after Al-Fatihah in the 3rd and 4th rak`ah of Prayer. However, people may forget the Prophet’s Sunnah in this regard.
Muslim Scholars held different viewpoints whether the rak`as which the masbuq [the one who joins the congregational Prayer after one or two rak`as] performs are considered to be the beginning or the end of his Prayer. If in his mind he compensates for the missed rak`as, then it is a confirmed sunnah to recite some verses after Al-Fatihah. However, if he considers those rak`ahs to be the end of his Prayer, then it is recommendable to recite some verses after Al-Fatihah bearing into consideration that reciting some verses after Al-Fatihah in the last two rak`as is sunnah as elaborated in the Sahih (authentic) book of hadith of Imam Muslim.
