There are certain general supplications which help fulfill one’s wishes. Before giving you these du`aa’s, let us reflect upon some of the verses in the Ever-Glorious Qur’an in which Allah Almighty addresses His last Messenger, Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him: “They ask thee, (O Muhammad), of new moons. Say: They are fixed seasons for mankind and for the pilgrimage.” (al-Baqarah: 189)

“They ask thee, (O Muhammad), what they shall spend. Say: That which ye spend for good (must go) to parents and near kindred and orphans and the needy and the wayfarer.” (al-Baqarah: 215)

“They ask thee (O Muhammad) what is made lawful for them. Say : ( all ) good things are made lawful for you.” (al-Ma’idah: 4)

“And when My servant question thee concerning Me, then surely I am nigh. I answer the prayer of the suppliant when he crieth unto Me. So let them bear My call and let them trust in Me, in order that they may be led aright.” (al-Baqarah: 186)

You notice in the first three verses that they start with “They ask thee” and then comes the answer to the questions starting with “Say”, but, in the fourth verse Allah Almighty immediately answers his servants without ordering His Messenger to convey the message to them through using the word “say”. This teaches us that when Allah is invoked by His servants, He wants no means or mediator between Him and them even if that means were His blessed last Messenger. Again, the question is “And when My servant question thee concerning Me”, then immediately comes the answer: “Then surely I am nigh.”!

It is Allah Who answers our du`aa’ and responds to our needs which He is more acquainted with than ourselves. So, invoke Him at all times and try to make use of the last third of every night just before Fajr as this is one of the most recommended timings to du`aa’ to be answered. Try your best to make du`aa’ at all the other recommended times such as in prostration, on Fridays, while you are fasting on Mondays and Thursdays, on the day of `Arafah, during the period between the Call for prayer and Iqamah, etc.

Regarding the du`aa’s that may help in this regard, let us quote the following.

One of the supplications in the Qur’an: “And of them (also) is he who saith: “Our Lord! Give unto us in the world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good, and guard us from the doom of Fire.” (Al-Baqarah: 201)

The commentators explain the good in this world as a righteous spouse. You can invoke Allah to grant you a righteous spouse. If there is a particular person you want to get married to then you can ask Allah to grant you what is good or facilitate the matter for you if it really entails good as one does not know what is really good for him/her. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told us that we should turn to Allah and seek His Help in all matters. He alone knows all the hidden things and only He has the perfect knowledge of the future. He has power to make things easy for us and guide us to right decisions. Therefore, you are advised to have full trust in Allah and at the same time ask Him to grant you a righteous spouse and to ease what is good to you.

You are advised to perform Prayer and obey Allah, Most High. Obedience to Allah and making Du`aa’ are means of attaining Allah’s favors and facilitating one’s marriage by getting a righteous spouse which is surely a great blessing of Allah. Also, you are recommended to earnestly persist in asking Allah to grant one a sustenance which will help him in getting married and remove any hurdles in this way. You can resort to istighfar (asking Allah for forgiveness). After that, have full trust in Allah and rest assured that Almighty Allah eases for you what is good. Almighty Allah says: “And I have said: Seek pardon of your Lord Lo! He was ever Forgiving. He will let loose the sky for you in plenteous rain, And will help you with wealth and sons, and will assign unto you Gardens and will assign unto you rivers.” (Nuh: 10-12)

It has been reported on the authority of `Abdullah ibn Abi Awfa that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If anyone wishes to solicit something from Allah or from human beings, let him perform ablution and offer two rak`ahs of Prayer, and then praise Allah and send salutations on His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and then supplicate as follows:
Laa ilaaha illaa Allaah al-haleem al-kareem subhaana Allah rabbi al-`arshi al-azheem, al-hamdu lillaahi rabbi al-`aalameen, as’aluka moojibaati rahmatika wa `azaa’ima maghfiratika wa al-ghaneemata min kulli birrin wa as-salaamata min kulli ithmin laa tada` lee dhanban illa ghafartahu wa laa hamman illaa farrajtahu wa laa haajatan hiya laka ridhan illaa qadaytahaa yaa arhama ar-rahimeen.
(There is no god but Allah, the Clement, the Bountiful; glory be to Allah, Lord of the Mighty Throne; praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds; I ask of You for the things that merit Your mercy and the things that bring me Your forgiveness; I beseech You for all that is virtuous, and freedom from all sins; do not leave for me any sin unless You forgive it, no worry unless You remove it, and no legitimate need of mine that is pleasing to You unless You fulfill it, O the Most Merciful of those who show mercy!)
Also, you can meditate frequently on the following:
Yaa hayyu yaa qayyoomu bi rahmatika astagheethu.
(O the Ever-Living, the Self-Subsisting Source of all beings, I beseech Your Mercy, so have mercy on me.)
Rabbi innee bimaa anzalta ilayya min khayrin faqeer.
(O Lord, I remain ever in need of any good that You may send my way.)

A last word:

With the above in mind, we do recommend you to make use of the following helpful tips given by Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and an Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in which he states:

1. You may attend various Islamic gatherings at Islamic centers or in mosques and you may engage in business like conversation with the members of the opposite sex, without being isolated with them.
2. You may also make use of brothers and sisters who may introduce you to prospective candidates and talk to them under supervision.
3. You may do some kind of correspondence with candidates who have advertised their names in the Islamic magazines.

While you invoke Allah for help, try to seek these practical solutions as well. This is because, as Muslims, we are ordained by Allah to take all legal possible means to achieve what we aspire for.
