Dr. `Abdul Fattah Idris, a professor of Islamic Jurisprudence, has responded on this issue as thus:
Sitting and studying with non-Muslims is not included in the prohibition of taking them as awliya’. Actually the word awliya’ bears the meaning of supporting, loving, intimate friendship, etc.
