The noble Prophet peace be upon him told us that “A true believer does not taunt or curse or abuse or talk indecently”.

If insulting and verbal bullying are forbidden, then it is more dangerous to use text or post them online. This is because they attract many audience and stay long in circulation. It is part of the duties of a Muslim to seek guidance of Islam in dealing not only with Muslims, but with non Muslims. Islam does not support bullying and bad mouthing.  Slandering, name calling, and other illicit acts online contradicticts the true teachings of Islam. “A Muslim is he from whose hands and tongue the Muslims are safe.” Hadith.

Sheikh Ahmad Hamd Al-Khalili, Mufti of Oman Sultanate says:

Internet is one of the blessings of Allaah and we should thank Him for that. A way to thank Him is for us not to use it in a way that displeases Him.

Everyone will be accountable for his speech and writings. Perhaps, accounting for written texts will be greater than that of spoken in form of face-to-face verbal words. This is because face-to-face verbal conversation only last for a few seconds and only have effect on those present there, but online texts such as blogs or posts have a longer effect on everyone reading them.

Considering the social media applications we have today, both the recorded voice and posted blogs or chats can become widespread than usual, and that would be a double burden on those who use the applications in a way that does not please Allah, tabaarka wa ta’aala.

The Prophet () said: “A person utters a word thoughtlessly (i.e., without thinking about its being good or not) and, as a result of this, he will fall down into the fire of Hell deeper than the distance between the east and the west.”

The Messenger of Allah () also said, “A man speaks a good word without knowing its worth, Allah records for him His Good Pleasure till the day he will meet Him; and a man utters an evil word without realizing its importance, Allah records for him His displeasure till the day he will meet Him.”

It is incumbent on every human to fear Allah in whatever they say or write.

A poet says:

Do not cause your tongue to mention others secret

For you are naked, and people also have tongues

Cyberbullying will not benefit the Ummah, rather it will continue to crack the wall until it collapses, and that is not what Allah will be pleased with.
