It is common for young believers to experience deep distress and concern for Islam when witnessing widespread ignorance, disbelief, and disrespectful comments against the faith. This heavy burden can sometimes lead to severe anxiety and depression, especially when others seem indifferent to the mockery of sacred values. However, a believer must understand how to navigate these emotions correctly to avoid spiritual and mental exhaustion.
A Blessing, Not a Burden
Prominent scholars state that such deep care for the religion and the Muslim community is actually a profound blessing from Allah, rather than a problem to be cured. A Muslim should express gratitude to Allah for possessing a heart that is alive to the realities of faith. Instead of succumbing to depression or anger, a believer must channel this energy in a positive and constructive direction.
The Importance of Righteous Company
Maintaining good mental and spiritual health requires a person to establish regular daily prayers and take proper physical care of themselves. Furthermore, one must seek the company of serious-minded Muslim youth who excel both academically and at home. It is crucial to avoid associating with those who lack ambition or who constantly complain about others, as negative company can quickly deepen feelings of despair.
Seeking Strength Through Tahajjud
To find solace and guidance, scholars highly recommend observing the Tahajjud (night) prayer. A person should wake up approximately an hour before the Fajr prayer. For optimal spiritual readiness, they should take a full bath with the intention of purity, put on clean clothes, and pray in complete seclusion.
The prayer should consist of four or eight rak’ahs (units of prayer) performed beautifully, with extended ruku’ (bowing) and sujud (prostration). During this intimate time, one should make earnest du’a (supplication), asking Allah for knowledge and guidance.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) emphasised the virtue of seeking Allah during this time, stating that Allah descends to the lowest heaven in the last third of the night, asking who is invoking Him so He may answer (Sahih al-Bukhari 1145).
Equipping Oneself with Knowledge
The most effective antidote to ignorance is education. A Muslim facing these challenges must dedicate themselves to their academic studies, whilst simultaneously learning more about Islamic teachings. By practising what they learn, they prepare themselves to eloquently correct false information and misconceptions about the religion.
Guiding Others to the Truth
Rather than letting the fire of faith turn into sorrow, a believer should allow it to grow and illuminate the path for others. By striving to become a true soldier of Allah, a person can help guide both Muslims and non-Muslims towards the right path. They should constantly pray that Allah utilises them for His work of truth and guidance, keeping them steadfast upon His religion.
