Sheikh Muhammad Nur Abdullah, President of the ISNA (Islamic Society of North America) and member of the Fiqh Council of North America, states: “It is not forbidden that a man talks to a woman and communicate with her through e-mails and other methods as long as both of them abide by the teachings of Islam and commit themselves to the code of ethics required when dealing with members of the opposite gender. However, if someone hides this relationship from his wife, then I would say it is forbidden for two reasons: 1) that it may lead to undesirable circumstances especially with the Shaitan trying to whisper to both of them; 2) that the concept of hiding gives the impression that the person is ashamed of something that he does not like others to know about it. Therefore, I would say it is unacceptable to communicate in such manner.”
