Having a wet dream (ihtilam) during the day while fasting—whether during Ramadan or voluntary fasts—does not invalidate the fast. Involuntary occurrences that take place while sleeping are entirely beyond human control, and Islamic jurisprudence operates on the fundamental principle that individuals are not held accountable for actions that occur without voluntary choice or conscious intent.

Involuntary Actions and Fast Validity

Sacred scripture reinforces that divine obligations account for human limitations:

Allah burdens not a person beyond his scope.” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:286)

Because a sleeping person possesses no conscious agency over their dreams or biological responses, experiencing a wet dream is legally analogous to accidentally swallowing water or inhaling dust while asleep. Scholars across all major legal schools unanimously agree that the fast remains completely valid, and the individual is not required to make up the day (qada’) nor offer any expiation (kaffarah).

Ritual Purification (Ghusl) Requirements

While the fast itself remains completely intact, ritual cleanliness must be restored before performing daily prayers (salah). If fluid or semen (maniy) is emitted as a result of the dream, the individual enters a state of major ritual impurity (janabah).

Restoring ritual purity requires a full bath (ghusl). The obligation for ghusl depends strictly on the physical presence of discharge upon waking:

  • Discharge Present: If semen or fluid is visible upon waking, performing ghusl is mandatory before praying.
  • No Discharge Present: If an individual recalls an erotic dream but finds no physical moisture or trace of discharge, no ritual bath is required.

Prophetic Guidance on Involuntary Dreams

Wet dreams are a natural physiological experience affecting both men and women alike. Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that Umm Sulaym came to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and asked:

“O Messenger of Allah, Allah is not shy of the truth. Is it necessary for a woman to take a bath (ghusl) after she has a wet dream?” The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) replied: “Yes, if she notices a discharge.” (Reported by Bukhari and Muslim)

A fasting worshipper who experiences a wet dream should simply perform ghusl, put on clean garments, and continue their fast with complete peace of mind, assured that their worship remains valid.
