The prominent Muslim scholar, Sheikh Muhammad Iqbal Nadvi, Director and Imam of Al-Falah Islamic Center, Oakville, Ontario, Canada, states: “This falls under the category of forbidden spying. Allah instructs us in the Qur’an: “And do not spy on one another.” A Muslim is forbidden to spy on other people for the sake of “fun”. Only in the case of strong probability of suspicion where investigation is required spying can be permitted. Therefore, the person who tries to listen to a private conversation must stop doing such sinful act and apologize or seek forgiveness from the offended person.
