Timing of Ihram for visitors to Saudi Arabia is a common concern for those traveling on visit visas who also intend to perform Umrah. The ruling depends primarily on the traveler’s specific intention at the start of the journey—whether the primary purpose is the pilgrimage itself or a social visit. This article clarifies the guidelines for entering the state of consecration (Ihram) for those visiting family in the Kingdom.
Determining the Intention (Niyyah)
According to prominent Azharite scholars, the requirement for Ihram is tied to the “basic and original intention” of the trip.
- Primary Intention is Family Visit: If the primary purpose of the journey is to visit a spouse or family member residing in Saudi Arabia, and Umrah is a secondary activity to be performed at some point during the stay, the traveler is not required to enter Ihram from their home country or at the Miqat (boundary) upon initial entry.
- Entering Ihram Later: In this scenario, the traveler may enter Saudi Arabia as a regular visitor. When they decide to perform Umrah later during their stay, they should assume Ihram from the location customary for the residents of the city where they are staying.
Procedure for Performing Umrah
Once the decision to perform Umrah is made, the ritual procedure is straightforward and consists of four main pillars:
- Ihram: Entering the sacred state with the specific intention of Umrah.
- Tawaf: Circumambulating the Ka’bah seven times.
- Sa’y: Walking/running seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah.
- Taqsir: Cutting or clipping a portion of the hair to conclude the pilgrimage.
