The journey towards repentance from adultery often begins with a heavy burden of guilt and a profound fear of divine accountability. When an individual falls into the grave sin of engaging in an illicit relationship, especially with another married person, the spiritual unrest can be overwhelming. Acknowledging the severity of this transgression and feeling deep remorse are the crucial first steps on the path back to the Creator.

Severing Ties and Concealing the Sin

To begin the process of seeking forgiveness, a person must completely sever all ties with the individual involved in the sin. It is an Islamic principle that believers should conceal their past sins rather than publicising them; thus, a Muslim must not inform anyone about the transgression, but rather turn privately and sincerely to Allah in seeking pardon.

The Conditions of Valid Repentance

Prominent scholars emphasise that seeking forgiveness for such a heinous act cannot be considered valid unless specific conditions are met. First, an individual must feel deep and genuine remorse for the sins committed. Second, they must totally refrain from the sin while deliberately abstaining from all circumstances, triggers, or pathways that led to the transgression in the first place. Third, a firm resolution must be made never to return to the sin, accompanied by an immediate effort to engage in good deeds to wipe out the past wrongs.

Addressing the Rights of Others

The aforementioned conditions primarily address sins involving the rights of Allah. However, if a transgression also involves the rights of other human beings, valid repentance requires additional steps. A person must do whatever it takes to redress the grievances of those they have wronged. Compensating them in any possible way or returning their rightful dues becomes an essential condition for the repentance to be accepted.

Hope in Divine Mercy

Despite the gravity of the sin, Islam teaches that a believer must never despair. When true repentance is accomplished through the correct steps, sins are undoubtedly wiped away, and a clean record is guaranteed. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) reassured the believers, stating:

The one who repents from sin is like one who did not sin” (Ibn Majah).

Furthermore, Allah explicitly promises boundless mercy for those who turn back in sincere regret:

“Say, ‘O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.'” (Surah Az-Zumar, 39:53).

“The repentance accepted by Allah is only for those who do wrong in ignorance [or carelessness] and then repent soon after. It is those to whom Allah will turn in forgiveness, and Allah is ever Knowing and Wise.” (Surah An-Nisa, 4:17).
