Muslim scholars unanimously have agreed on the fact that a woman who is pregnant or breastfeeding is allowed not to fast in Ramadan if fasting will be detrimental to her or the baby. However, Muslim scholars disagreed whether she is required to make up for the days she missed or to only pay fidyah.
In his response to this issue, the eminent Muslim scholar and renowned Da`iyah, Sheikh `Abdel Khaliq Hasan Ash-Shareef, states:
” As for the missed days because of pregnancy, you must fast those days again. If you think that you are unable to fast them because they are so many or due to a medical point of view, then you can pay fidyah (to feed a poor man or woman for everyday). You should pay for each single day you missed only one time. Namely, if you missed 60 days then you must feed sixty poor people. Some scholars said you can either give each poor person one nourishing meal or two meals. You can also pay money according to your own financial capacity.
May Allah guide us the right way and grant us salvation in this life and in the hereafter. Amen.
