Dr. Marawan Shahin, Professor of Hadith and its Sciences, Faculty of Usul Ad-Din (Theology),Al-Azhar Univ. states: “We are prohibited to eat the meat of pigs, dogs, domestic donkeys, cats, the dead animals, blood, that which is dedicated to anyone other than Allah, etc. Almighty Allah says, “Forbidden unto you (for food) are carrion and blood and swine flesh, and that which hath been dedicated unto any other than Allah, and the strangled, and the dead through beating, and the dead through falling from a height, and that which hath been killed by (the goring of) horns, and the devoured of wild beasts, saving that which ye make lawful (by the death stroke), and that which hath been immolated unto idols. And (forbidden is it) that ye swear by the divining arrows. This is an abomination…” (Al-Ma’idah: 3)
We are allowed to eat the wholesome meat of goats, ships, cows, camels.
Also, we are allowed to eat all marine animals. Almighty Allah says, “And it is He Who has subjected the sea (to you) in order that you may eat fresh meat from it….” (An-Nahl: 14) He also says, “The game of the sea is permitted to you and so is its food, a provision for you and for travelers by sea….” (Al-Ma’idah: 99)
We are also allowed to eat the meat of lawful animals slaughtered by the People of the Book (i.e. Jews and Christians) without being assigned to ask about the way of slaughter unless we are pretty sure that their way of slaughtering is unlawful (for example, if the animal is dead before slaughtering and you are sure of that).”
