Hajj obligation after Umrah is a topic that often causes confusion, particularly for individuals who have performed the minor pilgrimage (Umrah) using funds gifted by a relative. A common concern is whether completing this act of worship automatically triggers the obligation to perform the major pilgrimage (Hajj), even if the individual lacks the personal financial resources to do so. This article clarifies the rulings on gifted pilgrimages and the conditions of financial capability (Istita’ah).
The Validity of Gifted Pilgrimages
Islamic jurisprudence confirms that there is no objection to performing Umrah or Hajj using money gifted by a relative, friend, or any other person. If a believer receives financial support to undertake the journey to the Holy Lands, the pilgrimage is valid, and the reward is hoped for both the pilgrim and the sponsor. Accepting such a gift to fulfill a religious desire is permissible and considered a good deed.
Financial Capability and the Obligation of Hajj
The core condition for Hajj to become obligatory upon a Muslim is capability, both physical and financial.
Allah Almighty states in the Quran:
“And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House – for whoever is able to find thereto a way…” (Surah Ali ‘Imran, 3:97)
Scholars emphasize that Hajj is not obligatory for one who does not possess the financial means to perform it. The obligation is strictly tied to the individual’s ability to afford the journey and expenses at the time.
Does Umrah Make Hajj Obligatory?
Scholars state that performing Umrah does not, in itself, make Hajj obligatory for the pilgrim. If a person performs Umrah—whether through their own savings or via a gift—but remains financially unable to afford the costs of Hajj, the obligation of Hajj does not fall upon them.
Therefore, a relative who performs Umrah through the generosity of another is not required to perform Hajj afterwards if they continue to lack the financial resources. The obligation of Hajj remains suspended until the individual acquires the independent financial means to undertake the journey.
