It has been reported in an hadith that, Zaynab the daughter of Umm Salamah is reported to have said that Umm Salamah said: “Umm Sulaym came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, Allah is not too shy to tell us the truth. Does a woman have to do ghusl if she has a wet dream?’ The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: ‘Yes, if she sees water (a discharge).’ Umm Salamah covered her face and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, can a woman have an erotic dream?’ He said, ‘Yes, may your hands be rubbed with dust. How else would her child resemble her?’” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 130; Muslim, 313)
It has also been reported in Jami` As-Suyti as Sahih but there is a wide controversy among scholars of Hadith regarding its authenticity. Some of them regards it as sahih and others regards it as maudu` (rejected) and others regards it as Gharib.
Dr. Rif`at Fawzi, former professor of Shari`ah at Cairo Univ., states: “What is meant by the hadith is that a woman should do ghusl when she finds witness after a wet dream and a fondling between husband and wife in a way that results in attaining the climax of desire and thus gets witness (discharge that obligates ghusl). This description of men and women discharge applies when a person is healthy, and in most cases not in all cases.”
With the above in mind, we’d like to state that in the case of women, their fluid (discharge that obligates ghusl) is thin and yellow, although it could become white if the woman is strong. It has two distinguishing characteristics, either of which is sufficient to class the substance as obligating ghusl: firstly, it smells like the semen of men, and secondly, its emission is accompanied by feelings of pleasure and is immediately followed by exhaustion.
