Dr. Muzammil H. Siddiqi, President of the Fiqh Council of North America, states: “If the medicine is to be consumed, then alcohol must not be used at all, unless it has undergone a process of chemical transformation, then it becomes allowed. If the cosmetics or medicine is some kind of ointment, cream or lotion that is made for topical application only, then the alcohol does not matter because there is no consumption involved. The only case when medicine containing alcohol are permitted to be consumed is when it is a medical necessity and there is no other alternative available.”
