Out of Allah’s mercy and kindness, He guarantees provision and livelihood for every living creature. This fact is expressly stated in the Qur’an and Sunnah. However, Allah Almighty commands people to spare no efforts, while putting their trust in Almighty Allah, to earn their livelihood through halal </ i>means.

Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and an Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states: Almighty Allah has told us in His Book as well as through His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) that He will provide for us as long as we use the tools and resources He has granted us. Also, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “If you were to place your trust in Allah as you should, He would provide for you even as He provides for birds; see how they fly out of their nest at dawn and return satisfied at dusk.”

However, trusting in Almighty Allah does not mean being resigned to our fate and doing nothing. It requires that we exert efforts as best as we can. Almighty Allah has assured us that He will reward those who strive. Hence, we will not starve if we work for our living.
