Dr. Salah Sultan, President of the American Center for Islamic Research, Columbus, Ohio , and Member of the European Council for Fatwa and Research, states: This issue is controversial issue among scholars based on different interpretation of hadiths. According to imam Shafi’i and most scholars, excluding the shi`i school that requires 10 meals, five full nursing meals would effect the forbidden marriage relationship based on fosterage. According to Imam Ahmad, only two full meals. The opinion that seem to be the most correct and based on strong argument is that of Imam Shafi`i, that five equal full nursing meal would effect the foster relationship. Therefore, if one wishes to bring the two families together, then they should give five equal full meals in order to avoid the disagreements.
