Engaging in an illicit relationship (zina) is one of the most tragic and consequential sins in Islam. It is a heinous act that can have devastating effects. When such a relationship results in a pregnancy, it creates an extremely complex and serious situation, especially if the partners have different views on the next steps, such as marriage or abortion.

The Path to Sincere Repentance

The first and most important step is sincere repentance. The door to Allah’s forgiveness is always open, but tawbah (repentance) itself demands a firm resolve to cease from the sinful activity.

A person who has engaged in an adulterous relationship must:

  1. Feel deep regret for this shameful and serious sin.

  2. Stop the sinful act immediately.

  3. Resolve never to return to it.

  4. Engage in abundant istighfar (seeking forgiveness) and du’a’ (supplication) that Allah keeps their steps firm on the straight path.

Addressing the Pregnancy and Abortion

A partner may consider abortion because they feel the burden of the responsibility on their own and must deal with the consequences alone. Abortion for this reason is another grave sin in Islam.

If the man is sincere in his desire to correct the mistake, he should offer a clear and supportive alternative.

Offering Support and a New Life

Prominent scholars and counselors advise that offering marriage, establishing a family, and starting a new life of commitment and cooperation is the correct path forward. This shared responsibility might motivate the partner to give up the idea of abortion.

If the man can provide assurance that he will help his partner and the baby (for example, by supporting her desire to continue her studies), this may provide the hope needed to make the right choice.

Should they decide to marry, key factors for the success of this new family include:

  • Involvement with the local Muslim community.

  • Keeping good company.

  • Striving to set a good example of a committed Muslim life.

May Allah forgive and guide all believers to the best of actions.
