Determining the precise time for Asr prayer is a matter of validity for the daily worship. A common question arises regarding whether the prayer begins when an object’s shadow equals its length or when it doubles. Based on authentic Prophetic traditions, scholars have outlined the preponderant opinion regarding the start and end times of this afternoon prayer.
The Start of Asr
According to the majority of scholars and the clear evidence from the Sunnah, the time for the Dhuhr (noon) prayer ends and the time for Asr begins when the shadow of an object becomes equal to the length of the object itself.
To calculate this correctly, one must account for the “shadow of the zenith” (Fay’ az-Zawal). The sun is rarely directly overhead (casting no shadow) except in specific locations. Therefore, the formula is:
- Start of Asr = (Length of the Object) + (Length of the Shadow at Noon/Zenith).
Once the shadow reaches this length, the time for Dhuhr has expired, and the time for Asr has commenced.
The End of Asr
The window for the Asr prayer is divided into two distinct periods: the preferred time (Ikhtiyar) and the time of necessity (Darurah).
- The Preferred Time: This lasts from the beginning of Asr until the sun begins to turn yellow or orange. It is disliked to delay the prayer beyond this point without a valid excuse.
- The Time of Necessity: This lasts from the time the sun turns orange until the actual sunset. If a person prays during this time, their prayer is valid, though delaying it to this point is generally discouraged.
Evidence from the Hadith
The preponderant opinion is based on the comprehensive Hadith narrated by Abdullah ibn Amr, in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) detailed the timings:
“The time for Zuhr is from when the sun has passed its zenith and a man’s shadow is equal in length to his height until the time for ‘Asr comes. The time for ‘Asr lasts until the sun turns orange. The time for Maghrib lasts [from sunset] until the twilight has faded. The time for ‘Isha’ lasts until midnight…” (Sahih Muslim, 612)
Regarding the end of the time in cases of necessity, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever catches up with one rak`ah of ‘Asr before the sun sets has caught up with ‘Asr.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)
Conclusion
Based on the text of the authentic Hadith reported by Imam Muslim, the time for Asr begins when the shadow equals the object’s length (plus the zenith shadow). This serves as the decisive factor for the believer in establishing the prayer.
