Many times, fathers give a general permission to take some money whenever children want it, but it seems that children still have some doubts in their mind. For this reason it is better to confront their dad about it in order to remove any doubts in their heart.
Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states: If fathers gave general permission to take some money whenever children want it, children can assume that if they take $5 or $10 that is not considered as sinful or stealing on theirr part unless he has indicated a lesser amount or unless he has indicated something about the frequency of it. In other words, if he did indicate in some way, either directly or indirectly, that they are supposed to take only a lesser amount or that they are supposed to take it only once every a week or every two weeks or every month, then they are bound by the conditions he has suggested; in which case, if they do not abide by them that will be considered as sinful on their part.
Moreover, if children have some doubt in their mind, it is better to confront their dad about it and say that they are helping themself by taking such amounts occasionally. In this way they can clear their conscience before Allah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Sin is that which causes agitation and disquiet in your heart and you are afraid of being exposed before people; virtue is, on the contrary, that which brings peace to your heart.” He further stated, “Consult your own conscience, even if they give you a contrary ruling!”
