Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states: “It is permissible for a wife to take her husband’s surname as long as it is clear that they are following the custom of a country and it does not in any way indicate or suggest that he is her father. We need not to be rigid on issues which are not related to fundamentals of religion. We are allowed to go by customs as long as they do not violate any of the fundamental principles of religion.
