Jizyah

Dearest brother, As-Salaam `alaykum. Indeed, the issue of jizyah is one of the hot Islamic topics that are misunderstood by the orientalists. They used to attack Islam saying that non-Muslim minorities are persecuted in Muslim lands and they are obliged to pay the jizyah from time immemorial. Please, shed more light on the issue, and clarify the Islam’s stance on the concept of jizyah.

Dear sheikh, as-salamu `alaykum wa rahmatu Allah.Many people see that the wisdom behind imposing the jizyah on the dhimmis is to humiliate and insult them. They quote the verse that reads, (Until they pay the jizyah with willing submission and feel themselves subdued) (At-Tawbah 9: 29). Is this true?
