Understanding the correct supplications during Wudu is essential for any Muslim seeking to perfect their purification before prayer. Ablution is both a physical and spiritual act of cleansing, and individuals often desire to maximize their spiritual reward by reciting various prayers while washing different parts of the body. However, distinguishing between authentic prophetic traditions and later cultural additions is a fundamental aspect of maintaining the purity of acts of worship.

The Ruling on Supplications While Washing Limbs

Prominent scholars state that there is no textual proof indicating that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made any specific supplication (du’a) while washing or wiping individual limbs. Therefore, any form of prayer designated for specific body parts during the ablution process is considered an innovated practice that has no basis in established Islamic sources.

Authentic Invocations Before and After Ablution

Rather than reciting prayers during the physical act of washing, Islamic sources outline specific, authenticated moments for invocation before and after the process. A Muslim should commence their ablution by saying, “Bismillah il-Rahman il-Rahim” (In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful).

Once the ablution is completely finished, one should recite the Shahadatayn (the testimonies of faith) ande2 follow it with the established supplication: “Allaahumma-j’alni min al-tawwaabeen waj’alni min al-mutatahhireen” (O Allah, make me one of those who are oft-repentant and make me one of those who purify themselves).
