The arrival of the Last Hour is a core tenet of Islamic theology, serving as an ultimate reminder of human accountability and divine justice. In contemporary times, speculation regarding the end of the world frequently dominates public discourse. However, authentic Islamic sources shift the focus from sensationalized predictions to proactive spiritual preparation. When a companion asked the Prophet Muhammad about the exact date of the Day of Judgement, the Messenger redirected his focus with a foundational question: “What have you prepared for that day?”

The portents of the Hour are intended to inspire sincere repentance, active worship, and positive engagement in the world, rather than fatalism or passive waiting. Traditional scholars classify these signs into minor milestones—many of which have already transpired or are currently unfolding—and major cataclysmic events that will signal the immediate approach of the Resurrection.

The Five Major Portents of the Hour

Prominent scholars, including Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen, outline the primary major signs that will fundamentally alter the state of the world:

  • The Emergence of the Dajjal (The Antichrist): A catastrophic trial involving a one-eyed imposter who will claim lordship and perform deceptive miracles. He will rapidly traverse the earth, though divine protection will bar him from entering the holy sanctuaries of Makkah and Madinah.
  • The Descent of Jesus Christ: The son of Mary will return to earth, descending at the white minaret east of Damascus. He will establish absolute justice, abolish false creeds, and slay the Dajjal at the gate of Ludd. The Quran affirms his future return:

“And there is none of the People of the Scripture but must believe in him before his death. And on the Day of Resurrection, he will be a witness against them.” (Surah An-Nisa, 4:159)

  • The Outbreak of Gog and Magog (Yajuj and Majuj): Two immense, destructive nations from the lineage of Adam whose release from their ancient barrier will cause widespread tribulation across the globe. Prophetic traditions explicitly detail their physical traits, describing them as a people with broad faces and small eyes, whose countenances resemble fleshy, “hammered shields” (al-majan al-mitraqah), as preserved in the authentic classical collections (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 3587; Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 4099).
  • The Appearance of the Beast (Dabbat al-Ard): A unique creature brought forth from the earth to speak directly to mankind regarding their historical lack of certain faith. The Quran explicitly references this event:

“And when the word befalls them, We will bring forth for them a creature from the earth speaking to them, [saying] that the people were, of Our verses, not certain [in faith].” (Surah An-Naml, 27:82)

  • The Sun Rising from the West: A cosmic shift that marks the definitive closure of the gates of spiritual transformation. Following this event, the acceptance of new faith or sudden repentance is invalidated, as outlined in Surah Al-An’am (6:158).

The Ultimate Conclusion of Worldly Existence

Following the era of peace established during the remaining lifetime of Jesus, human society will eventually decay into total moral degradation, to the point where no one remains on earth declaring the name of the Creator. The final physical markers will include a great fire originating from the Hijaz and the destruction of the Ka’bah by an Abyssinian leader.

Ultimately, the Day of Judgement will fall upon the worst of creation. The cosmic order will terminate with the first blowing of the Trumpet by the Angel Israfil, causing every living entity in the heavens and the earth to swoon, followed by the second blast that initiates the physical resurrection of all mankind.
