Navigating mosque leadership disputes requires a delicate balance of wisdom, patience, and a commitment to preserving unity among believers. Occasionally, individuals who establish or manage Islamic centres may adopt harsh administrative styles, alienating congregants and reacting negatively to private correction. Such situations can cause deep division, driving valuable members away from their local congregation and creating hardship for the community.

The Responsibility of Mosque Supervisors

It is the primary obligation of all those who build mosques or supervise their affairs to fear Allah and refrain from causing division within the Muslim community through their deeds or behaviour. Leaders must epitomise the character of a committed Muslim. A person in a position of authority must recognise that persistently harming others or ruling dictatorially will undoubtedly lessen the rewards of their good deeds in the Hereafter.

Correcting Misconduct with Wisdom

When attempting to advise a community leader, individuals must approach the matter with leniency, using wisdom and fair exhortation. Almighty Allah commands believers to use gentleness and intellect when calling others to what is right, stating:

“Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best” (Surah An-Nahl, 16:125).

Furthermore, a fundamental principle is that a believer must never attempt to remove an evil by resorting to another evil means. Reacting to poor leadership with inappropriate behaviour will only aggravate the matter further and add insult to injury.

Collective Action and Mediation

Addressing systemic issues within an Islamic centre often requires a collective, organised effort rather than isolated individual actions. To rectify the situation, community members are advised to take the following steps:

  • Unite with influential individuals in the community to establish a unified stance on how to deal with the problem.
  • Form a respectful, constructive pressure group within the local Muslim community to help alleviate the hardship caused by the mismanagement.
  • Seek the mediation of a local scholar or imam who is knowledgeable and beloved in the area, as their intervention can help solve the problem and gather people together harmoniously.
  • Continuously strive to convince the wrongdoer of the severity of their behaviour and how its continuation threatens their rewards in the Hereafter.

Family Co-ordination and Spiritual Recourse

When a Muslim wife seeks to address and remove evils within her community, she is encouraged to join hands with righteous people. However, this communal involvement should be done in co-ordination with her husband to prevent any unintended marital problems from arising due to unilateral actions.

Finally, believers must never underestimate the power of supplication. A community should consistently make du’aa (supplication) for the individual causing the hardship, asking Allah to guide them to the straight path. Sincere supplication remains an unfailing method for rectifying wrong behaviour and restoring peace to a congregation.
