The question of validity regarding performing Tawaf from inside the Hijr (the semi-circular wall also known as Hijr Ismail) is a common concern for pilgrims reviewing their past worship. Because the Hijr is historically considered part of the Kaaba, the valid circumambulation (Tawaf) must be performed outside of it.
However, when a pilgrim is unsure—years after the fact—whether they walked inside or outside this area, or whether the Tawaf was mandatory or voluntary, Islamic jurisprudence offers specific principles to alleviate anxiety.
The Status of Hijr Ismail
Scholars agree that Hijr Ismail is part of the Sacred House. Therefore, a complete Tawaf requires circumambulating the Kaaba and the Hijr together. Walking inside the Hijr is equivalent to walking inside the Kaaba itself, which does not count as a rotation around it.
Despite this strict technical rule, the validity of a past Hajj is protected by the rules governing doubt (Shakk).
Doubt After Worship
A fundamental maxim in Islamic Fiqh is that “Certainty is not removed by doubt.” Once a specific act of worship is completed, doubts that arise later are generally disregarded unless there is absolute certainty that a mistake occurred.
- Timing of Doubt: If a pilgrim doubts the correctness of a ritual while performing it, they correct it immediately. However, if the doubt arises after the ritual is finished—or years later—it is considered Waswasah (whispers of Satan) and carries no legal weight.
- The Ruling: Consequently, the Hajj is presumed valid. The pilgrim should not entertain thoughts of “what if” regarding the path taken around the Kaaba unless they have clear, undeniable memory of the error.
The Hanafi Perspective on Rounds
To further reassure the heart, scholars point to the flexibility found in the Hanafi school of thought regarding the rounds of Tawaf.
- Majority vs. Totality: According to the Hanafi Madhab, completing all seven rounds is a duty (Wajib), but the foundational validity of the Tawaf (the Rukn) rests on performing the majority of the rounds (four or more).
- Implication: Even if, hypothetically, a few rounds were performed incorrectly (inside the Hijr), the core validity of the Hajj remains intact. This perspective serves to dismantle the fear that the entire pilgrimage is void.
Spiritual Advice
Scholars advise believers to shun these obsessive doubts, as matters of religion are not judged by mere suspicion.
- Ignore the Doubts: One should assume the worship was accepted.
- Focus on Dhikr: Being constant in the remembrance of Allah protects the mind from anxiety and Satanic whispers.
- Supplication: Ask Allah for protection from confusion and for happiness in this life and the Hereafter.
