The obligation of paying Zakat in gold is a critical aspect of wealth purification for a Muslim, raising practical questions about how to properly discharge this duty. When individuals own a significant amount of gold jewellery, they must calculate the annual due once it reaches the designated threshold. A frequent point of inquiry is whether this religious obligation must be paid in cash, or if it can be settled by giving actual pieces of gold.
Fulfilling Zakat with Physical Metals
Prominent scholars state that it is entirely permissible to give physical gold as Zakat for gold jewellery. If a person possesses various pieces of jewellery—such as rings, earrings, or bracelets—made of pure gold (excluding the weight of any stones or mixed alloys), they are permitted to extract a specific piece of jewellery to give away as their Zakat payment.
The Condition of Weight Accuracy
The primary condition for paying in kind is strict adherence to the prescribed percentage. The physical gold given must equal exactly 2.5% of the total weight of the pure gold owned.
For instance, if an individual owns 200 grams of pure gold, dispensing an item weighing 5 grams accurately fulfils the requirement. By ensuring the given item meets the precise 2.5% weight calculation, a Muslim correctly purifies their wealth and property.
