Many Muslims who strive to adhere to the laws of Allah, such as wearing the hijab, sometimes face hostile circumstances. This criticism can be especially difficult when it comes from their own parents, who may view this religious commitment as “fundamentalist” or extreme.
This can leave a person feeling torn between their gratitude to Allah for guidance and their love for their family. Such a stand emulates the steadfastness of Allah’s Messengers, who remained resolute in the face of persecution.
Maintain Kindness and Politeness
Despite any irrational behavior or criticism from parents, a person should never be rude or impolite. It is important to show through practical examples that they are still loved. This includes speaking gently and acting kindly.
Hurtful words should be borne with patience. The Quran advises believers on how to deal with the ignorant:
“When the ignorant address them, they walk away from them saying, ‘Peace.’” (Al-Furqan: 63)
Strengthen Faith and Remember Allah
One can reinforce their determination to follow the truth by remembering the transient nature of this world and that the final destination is meeting Allah. The constant remembrance of Allah (dhikr) can lessen this burden, bring joy, and soothe an ailing heart.
Reflecting on the struggles and sacrifices of the Messengers of Allah can provide strength. It is good to read Surah Yusuf reflectively, as it embodies the constant struggle between truth and falsehood.
A person should use opportunities to speak gently and persuasively to family members. If they do not listen, one should not give up praying to Allah to open their hearts and guide them to the truth.
Finally, it can be helpful to think of other creative ways of persuasion, such as turning to a knowledgeable and respected third party who can speak to the family, or providing a book that explains the issue clearly.
